Interwoven: A Pioneer Chronicle
Published in Hardcover by Texas A&M University Press (September, 1982)
Average review score:

I had to own this book!I first checked this book out of our local library, and after reading it I knew I had to have this book in my personal libraby! The author does a wonderful job of transporting the reader back to early pioneer days in Texas. The reader is at once engrossed in the book and finds the trials and hardships of that time, as compared to life today, almost unbelievable. This book is much more than an autobiography. It's an interesting and inspiring story, very well written, that will linger on in the readers mind for a long time.

The Jack Ruby Trial Revisited: The Diary of Jury Foreman Max Causey
Published in Hardcover by University of North Texas Press (September, 2000)
Average review score:

Comprises both Causey's diary and memoirMax Causey was a 35 year old administrative engineer when he was drafted into the jury that was to determine the legal fate of Jack Ruby for his murder of Lee Harvey Oswald, who was alleged to have been the assassin of President John F. Kennedy. Causey made the jury foreman and during the course of the trial kept a diary written in long-hand on a reporter's notebook. The diary begins with the second day of his jury duty and is filled with notes taken day-by-day as the trial continued, ending on Saturday, Mary 14, when the jury delivered its verdict. Causey then wrote a short epilogue. Later, he wrote a memoir based on that diary. Ably edited by John Dempsey, assistant professor of Journalism at the University of North Texas, The Jack Ruby Trial Revisited comprises both Causey's diary and memoir, augmented with editor's notes taken from the trial transcripts, books, newspaper and magazine articles and interviews with other surviving members of the jury. The Jack Ruby Trial Revisited is highly recommended reading for students of the JKF assassination controversy and the American criminal justice system.

The Japanese Texans
Published in Paperback by Univ of Texas Inst of Texan Cultures at San Antonio (April, 1987)
Average review score:

Comprehensive History of Nikkeis in TexasThis is the best book ever written on the little known story of the Japanese immigrants in Texas. From the turn-of-the-century Rio Grande ricefields to the multi-national businesses in Houston, the author has described the Japanese immigrant experience in his native Texas. The book was especially interesting to me as a 4th generation descenedent of these people. I am forever grateful to the author for documenting the history of these people.

Johnny Texas
Published in Paperback by Hendrick-Long Publishing (August, 1992)
Average review score:

Historical Fiction at its BestThis book packs adventure, strong characters, and an accurate account of early Texas history into a literary delight for young readers. Perfect as a "read-aloud," this book captures the interests of students ranging from those with "sensitive souls" to the "rough-and-tumble" variety. Chronicling an immigrant family from Germany who left Europe to find freedom, readers experience authentic pioneer adventure as the main character, Johnny, a ten year old boy, learns some of life's hardest lessons. I appreciated this book for its eye-opening treatment of the slavery issue. Many of my third grade students developed a deeper sensitivity and gratitude for their personal freedoms after the reading of this book. There are many "cliff-hanger" moments in this writing and be prepared, you may need a tissue every now and then. You'll enjoy reading this book again and again whether you are from Texas or not.

Action packed adventureThis story shows young readers that grown up responsiblities are not an easy task. But once completed, gives you a good sense of self worth and love for the family. Johnny encounters several adventures on his trip to deliver the familys crop for the year, after his father suffers an injury. He undertakes the trip with reluctance and an uncertain attitude. He soon discovers, its not as easy as he originally thought. Through trial and error and the fine example that had been set by his parents, Johnny goes through this adventure pretty much on his own.

Journey Through Texas
Published in Hardcover by Time Life (February, 1982)
Average review score:

Journey Through TexasThe best word to describe this book: excellent. It is informative narrative coupled with humor. It depicts the life of the times in relation to different ethic enclaves and commmentaries regarding each area. The narrative is written in a smooth -flowing style that makes for easy reading on what might have otherwise been a potentially boring topic. Young Olmstead's ability to provide such a mature and perceptive perspective on his topics of choice allows us to see how this famous visionary could have envisioned and thereby formulated the most famous landscapes of the USA in later years.
